Max Pfeffer, professor and chair, Department of Development Sociology, and John Schelhas of the USDA Forest Service have a new book, Saving Forests, Protecting People? Environmental Conservation in Central America. The book reports on research they conducted on mental and cultural models of forests, national parks, and wildlife in communities adjacent to and inside two national parks, La Amistad International Park in Costa Rica and Cerro Azul Meambar National Park in Honduras. Their primary focus was on the social and cultural processes that ensue when externally imposed conservation meets local people with resource-dependent livelihoods, and how these processes vary in different circumstances-in this case, different park management models and countries with very different social and environmental histories.
