Those of us who are here every day are constantly reminded of change. We see the Life Sciences Technology Building taking form . . . soon, we will celebrate the opening of a beautifully renovated Mann Library. . . . an entire wing is gone from Martha Van . . . and a new green space is being created in front of Bailey Hall.
But, much as we need them, CALS is not defined by buildings. Our presence is known by our commitment to our mission, the reach of our ideas and scholarly aspirations, and our impact at home and abroad.
And our reasons for being here — to develop leaders and improve lives — have never changed, though the scope of our activities has grown exponentially.
President David Skorton, in his commencement address two weeks ago, asked us to consider our international reach. He offered his vision for a university-driven “Marshall Plan” for the underdeveloped world. He is calling upon Cornell and other major universities to take a concerted role in capacity-building to counter human suffering and political instability.
