Realizing Important Campaign Priorities
The big news on campus this fall has been the inauguration of President David Skorton and the launch of the university’s new capital campaign. Everyone seems delighted by the new president’s great sense of humor, his discerning grasp of the issues important to Cornell’s future, and his vision for Cornell’s engagement in the world. He is providing great momentum for “Far Above... The Campaign for Cornell,” which was launched at the end of October.
The opportunity to launch a major campaign gives the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences the chance to raise important support for the College’s leading academic priorities. Given the uncertainty that CALS continually faces with the New York State budget, we are especially excited about opportunities to raise support for key facilities, and build critical endowments for faculty and students, including professorships, graduate fellowships, and undergraduate scholarships.
We have an especially great need to endow professorships in CALS. When I became dean in 2000, we had only eight endowed professorships. Since that time, and particularly with the successful Campaign for the Undergraduate Business Program, we have more than doubled that number. We would like to increase this number significantly again during the current campaign.
