Special Student status is nondegree in nature and is extended to a limited number of students who wish instruction in selected agriculture courses to update current knowledge or to prepare for employment. This occasionally includes those who already have a first degree, but want further undergraduate course work. Special Student status should not be viewed as a way to improve a previous collegiate record in order to enter graduate or professional schools.
Students currently enrolled in a four-year program who wish to attend the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for one or two semesters and then return to their "home" institution may apply for Visiting Student status.
Applicants for admission as Special or Visiting Students must present the following entrance credentials:
- The request for Special or Visiting Student status consideration must include a listing of the courses a student wishes to take. This information is requested on the Cornell University transfer application.
- All application forms required of regular transfer applicants including: High school and college transcripts.
- Evidence of recent work experience or academic experience that qualify the student for his/her intended special studies must be presented.
- In the case of visiting students, candidates must present written evidence that the credits earned at Cornell will be accepted toward a degree at the "home" college.
Once approved for admission, the Special or Visiting Student must plan his/her studies within these guidelines:
- Students must carry at least 12 credit hours of courses each semester, of which at least two-thirds must be taken in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In cases where courses have a limited enrollment, a place in that course(s) cannot be assured, especially in spring semester courses where the timing of the admissions process does not normally allow time for preregistration.
- The Special or Visiting Student status is normally offered for one or two semesters.
- Transfer to the degree program is sometimes possible for Special Students whose records are considerably better than average.
- Tuition and fee charges are the same as for regular undergraduate students in the college. However, no financial aid is available for Special Students.
