Plant Sciences students may decide to choose a concentration in one of six areas:
- Crop Science
- Horticulture
- Plant Biology
- Plant Genetics and Breeding
- Plant Pathology
- Plant Protection
See Plant Sciences major factsheet for more information.
Course requirements
- See Distribution Requirements for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
- A minimum of 40 credits of Cornell Courses or equivalent taken at other institutions in subject matter areas determined by the faculty are essential for the Plant Sciences major. Some of these courses also fulfill CALS distribution requirements. See Plant Science Required Courses (.pdf)
- Specific courses required for Plant Science majors with a Horticulture concentration:
· HORT 400 - Plant Propagation (3 credits)
· Two HORT courses in plant production or management at the 400 level (6 credits)
· An additional course of integrated pest management (plant pathology, entomology, or weed science) beyond the 3 credit Plant Science core requirement (3 credits)
Transfer students in the Plant Sciences major who choose a concentration in Horticulture must complete a minimum of 12 credits in horticulture courses at Cornell.
Students transferring into Cornell from other colleges can petition to waive or adjust those requirements, in consultation with faculty advisors.
Although mastery of these core curriculum subject areas is considered essential for students planning to enter a horticulture career, justifiable exceptions to the core curriculum may be granted by the student’s advisor.
With permission of her/his advisor, a transfer student may receive core curriculum credit for similar courses taken at other institutions, provided that transfer credit is granted by Cornell.
