The Cornell Teacher Education (CTE) program prepares science, agricultural science, and mathematics teachers for secondary school (grades 7-12) certification. Cornell undergraduates majoring in a science, agricultural science or mathematics field can become a member of the CTE program as early as their freshman year, although many Cornell students join the CTE program in their junior or senior year.
As a member of the CTE program, students have an education advisor, who assists in choosing courses to fulfill the CTE requirements for teaching certification. CTE students complete a minor in education as undergraduates and then continue for a two semester masters' program, the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree. The masters' program includes one semester of full-time student teaching, and one semester of additional coursework in the major teaching area or related areas.
Students who prepare to teach agricultural science can complete all the certification requirements as undergraduates, including student teaching, but are strongly urged to complete the masters' degree.
