Wondering where to put your new business now that you have outgrown your apartment or your parent's garage?  Learn how to avoid neophyte's mistakes that could cost you time and money; get it right the first time!  Richard M. Warshauer (A&S '71), a veteran NY City commercial real estate expert, will share some of the do's and don'ts critical to any new enterprise looking for its first real business space.

Presenter:   

Richard Warshauer is an established real estate industry veteran with more than 33 years of real estate industry experience, Mr. Warshauer rejoined FirstService Williams, now Colliers International, in 2001 as a Senior Managing Director. He has represented major commercial tenant organizations and property owners. As part of his not-for-profit/institutional practice, Mr. Warshauer has assisted the Empire State College of the State University of New York for more than 26 years, completing numerous major NYC-area relocations and consulting assignments. He is assisting The Salvation Army in a tri-state portfolio review and action plan, having recently advised them in closing a multi-million dollar complex land transaction in the NYC outer boroughs. Also, Mr. Warshauer is currently representing a major international conglomerate in its US growth plan. In addition, he served as consultant to the Government of Canada for a comprehensive NYC property evaluation study and action plan. Mr. Warshauer is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Arts and Sciences. He is a certified Black Belt and Green Belt in
General Electric Capital’s Six Sigma training program, as well as having completed numerous Dale Carnegie training courses. Mr. Warshauer has taught at the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) and New York University’s Real Estate Institute and Stern School of Business. He leads historical walking tours for the Museum of American Finance and other groups.

Topic:  Building the Team

Building the Team:  this Seminar will focus on talent identification and recruitment in the entrepreneurial context.   It will cover how to legally and effectively identify candidates to best meet your organization's staffing needs and how to use the hiring process effectively as an extension of your organizational brand.  Specific topics include what you can and can't ask in a job interview; laws related to background and reference checks; whether to have employment agreements, and, if so, what they should contain; and how to design an interview process that maximizes your odds of finding the "right" candidate for your business or organization.  

Presenters:   

Risa Mish, a graduate of Cornell University and Cornell Law School, teaches critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership at the Johnson School of Management and is Principal of Risa M. Mish, Esq., a labor and employment law and human capital consulting practice providing services to businesses and non-profit organizations.             

Pam Strausser, Harvard BA, Cornell MS from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, teaches and consults to faculty on issues of leadership, governance, performance management and conflict resolution for the department of Organizational Development Services, and is President of Cosmos Hill Associates, consulting to leaders in all market sectors on strategic organization change, performance management and conflict.
