Opportunities
The CALS Diversity Committee is encouraging opportunities for undergraduate underrepresented minority students (African-American, Native American, and Hispanic) to conduct independent research. Students conduct research under the mentorship of a faculty member in the college. This opportunity encourages a close faculty-student relationship as well as experience with the research process. These experiences may enhance students' direction and opportunities for their careers.
Funding
Funding is available to the faculty mentor to defray part of the costs of materials for the student's research. Typical funding will be about $500, depending on the requests and available funding. New funds become available in the fall of each year, but a student may apply at any time of year, including for summer research. Although there is no deadline for requests, funding will be awarded only if still available.
Application Process
Students may obtain an application for funding independent research in 140 Roberts Hall or download it. Complete applications should be returned to Don Viands in 140 Roberts Hall. Students who wish to receive academic credit for independent research, also need to complete a CALS Independent Study, Research, Teaching, or Internship Course Registration Form (in 140 Roberts Hall).
