Welcome to the information site on CoursEnroll. CoursEnroll is a service on Just the Facts that allows students to request classes for the upcoming semester during the pre-enrollment period and to enroll in or drop classes for the current semester during the add/drop period. Pre-enrollment functionality in CoursEnroll is only available on the full application version of Just the Facts through Bear Access. Add/drop functionality in CoursEnroll is available through all three versions of Just the Facts — the application version on Bear Access, the web version and via uPortal.cornell.edu. Here are some of the most popular questions and answers during enrollment time of our students:
What does pre-enrollment mean?
Pre-enrollment is a wish list of courses that students would like in their schedule for the upcoming semester. Pre-enrollment is not an enrollment guarantee; it is merely an enrollment request. Instructors and departments reserve the right to conduct "course balancing," a process in which students are administratively dropped from classes for a variety of reasons ranging from a student not meeting the stated pre-requisites to the course being canceled. Course balancing is conducted after the pre-enrollment period.
Students pre-enroll during a specific time period, which is based on the student's current class and term. CALS students are required to "lock-in" their pre-enrollment request. This requires them to enter a PIN which is available through their faculty advisor.
More information on pre-enrollment can be found on the University Registrar's web site for CoursEnroll.
I am interested in doing an individual study, supervised teaching, internship or undergraduate research. How do I enroll for this?
You must enroll using a paper enrollment form (often referred to as the pink independent study form). You cannot enroll for this type of course through CoursEnroll. If by some chance the system allows you to enroll in such a course through CoursEnroll, this has occurred in error. You will eventually be dropped from this course unless the appropriate enrollment form is received by the CALS Registrar's Office.
Enrollment forms are available in the CALS Registrar's Office, 140 Roberts Hall. This form can only be used for individual study, supervised teaching, internship, or undergraduate research in CALS. This means that a CALS faculty member must be responsible for assigning a grade. If you are working with a faculty member in another college, you must follow the enrollment procedures for that college.
To enroll in BIO G 299 or BIO G 499, you must contact the Biology Department directly in 216 Stimson or visit their Web site http://www.bio.cornell.edu/forms/ for more information.
Credits earned for individual study, supervised teaching, internships, or undergraduate research cannot be applied towards your college distribution requirements.
Course numbers titled 496 refer to internships
Course numbers titled 497 refer to individual study courses.
Course numbers titled 498 refer to supervised teaching experience.
Course numbers titled 499 refer to undergraduate research.
How many credits are allowed for an individual study, supervised teaching, internship or undergraduate research during my academic career at Cornell?
A maximum of 15 credits from individual study, supervised teaching, internship, or undergraduate research courses can be applied towards your degree (this number is pro-rated with Non-Cornell credit - if you have transferred any credits into the college, including AP, IB, GCE, and CASE please refer to the pro-rated letter/structured credit sheet for how many unstructured credits you are allowed to complete). You are certainly welcome to take more credits like this, but after 15 credits have been taken the required amount of credit to graduate will start to increase (ex: if you take 20 individual study credits, you will be required to complete 125 academic credits to graduate).
I want to take a course S/U. How do I enroll for this option? How many credits can I take S/U?
If a course is offered with the S/U grading option, you can enroll with this grading option through Just the Facts or with a paper add/drop form. If a course is not offered S/U, you must enroll in this course for a letter grade. If a course is offered exclusively for a letter grade, you cannot enroll in this course with the S/U grading option, even with instructor permission.
100 letter-graded credits are required for graduation. Therefore, a student can apply a maximum of 20 credits S/U credits toward their graduation requirements. Students can complete more than 20 S/U credits, as long as they understand that they still need 100 letter credits for graduation.
A course can be completed with the S/U grading option and counted toward the college distribution requirements. For major requirements, please consult with your faculty advisor.
If you are a transfer student, the number of letter credits required for graduation is pro-rated based on the number of transfer credits that have been applied toward your Cornell degree. For example, if 60 non-Cornell credits have been applied toward your degree, you must complete a minimum of 50 letter-graded credits at Cornell. Therefore, a maximum of 10 S/U credits can be applied toward your Cornell degree. Please refer to the pro-rated letter/structured credit sheet for more detailed information.
I am unable to enroll in a course because it is full or requires permission. How do I add this course to my schedule?
If you need to add a course that is full or is listed as "by permission only", follow these steps:
Remember that you are not "in" the course until the paper add/drop form has been processed!
I am unable to use Just the Facts to enroll for courses. Does this mean I need to use a paper add/drop slip to add all my courses?
Not necessarily. There are a number of reasons why you may not be able to enroll via Just the Facts.
I pre-enrolled for a course and I noticed that it no longer appears on my schedule, what happened?
Pre-enrollment is not an enrollment guarantee; it is merely an enrollment request. Instructors and departments reserve the right to conduct "course balancing," a process in which students are administratively dropped from classes for a variety of reasons ranging from a student not meeting the stated pre-requisites to the course being canceled. Course balancing is conducted after the pre-enrollment period.
If you were balanced out of a course and the course was not canceled, you can still try to add it during the add/drop period through CoursEnroll or with a paper add/drop form.
I have enough credits to put me at a higher class standing. Can I update my class standing for the pre-enrollment period?
Class standing (and consequently the pre-enrollment period) is determined by your expected graduation date. If you wish to graduate early, you need to apply. This requires advisor and college approval. Be advised that your class standing affects financial aid. It is the student's responsibility to discuss this with the Financial Aid Office.
I am currently abroad or on a leave of absence and do not have access to Just the Facts. How do I enroll for courses?
You can either e-mail your request to the CALS Registrar or fax your enrollment request to (607) 254-4613.
