Departmental Info: Founded in 1893 in the scenic Gallatin Valley just north of Yellowstone National Park, Montana State University (MSU) is a land grant university with total enrollment of approximately 12,000 students, including about 1,200 graduate students. Research is approximately $100 million annually and has been growing steadily. Bozeman is an attractive, culturally alive city located in the northern Rocky Mountain region. The 70,00 residents of Bozeman and surrounding areas in the nation, including two world-class ski areas, blue ribbon trout fishing streams, National Forest and an excellent quality of life.
The Department of Animal and Range Sciences (A&RS) is one of seven units in the College of Agriculture with 14 tenured/tenure-track faculty. While the department research encompasses several areas of animal and range sciences, the primary emphasis is on animal physiology (cattle,equine), animal nutrition (cattle, sheep) and range ecology. The on-campus teaching program has five undergraduate options with two majors with an enrollment on 210 students and 22 MS and PhD students. The outreach education program focuses on livestock production and range management in partnership with Montana constituents.
The Department has a productive relationship with USDA-ARS at Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory in Miles City, MT and is currently in the process of obtaining funding for a new USDA-ARS facility at MSU. The Department will be housed in a new state-of-the-art building (completion date: June 2010) which substantially expands the Department's research and teaching opportunities. The new Department Head, in conjunction with faculty and constituents, will have an unusual opportunity to shape and expand the Department including new faculty hires. Montana and the surrounding region provide exceptional opportunities for multiple discipline, multiple-scale, from the lab to landscape, research and instruction.
The College of Agriculture (COA), the Montana Agriculture Experiment Station (MAES), and the Extension Service (ES) provide financial support and opportunities for innovative program design, development and implementation in an entrepreneurial environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department Head is responsible for: 1) providing dynamic vision and leadership for the Department in concert with MSU and COA/MAES strategies and priorities, 2) leading, coordinating, growing and administering the Department's teaching, research and outreach programs; 3) fostering a Department culture that is participatory, dynamic, futuristic, and unique to the region/nation and supports faculty,staff and student excellence; 4) recruiting personnel, managing budgets, evaluation performance, coordinating promotion and tenure processes, participating in development activities and managing A&RS resources, and 5) representing the faculty in various capacities on-and-off campus. In addition, the Department Head is expected, at levels commensurate with the administrative appointment, to provide high quality teaching, to maintain a research program and/or to provide quality outreach that complement of enhance current activities. The successful applicant should have experience in leading a diverse undergraduate and gradate program and have an appreciation and understanding of the need of faculty specializing in multiple disciplines and engaged in multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and research.

Required Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Animal Science, Range Science or closely related discipline.

2.Quality participation in teaching (on-campus and/or outreach) and research programs.
|
|
3. Experience leading personnel and managing budgets.
|

4. Demonstrated ability to direct graduate student research.
|
|
5.Research and teaching qualifications commensurate with appointment to Full Professor.
Preferred Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated ability in administration.

2.Experience in establishing and maintaining externally-funded programs.
