Job Description
Mission: Established in 1898 as the Art Commission, New York City's design review agency was renamed the Design Commission in July 2008 to better reflect its mission. Located in City Hall, the Commission meets every three weeks to review works of art, architecture and landscape architecture proposed on or over City-owned property. Projects include construction or restoration of buildings, such as museums and libraries; creation or renovation of parks and playgrounds; installation of lighting and other streetscape elements; and design, installation and conservation of artwork. There are 11 Commissioners, who serve pro bono, and five full-time staff members. The Commission also acts as caretaker and curator of the City's public art collection and maintains an extensive archive documenting the history of New York City's public works. The archive is frequently used by historians, students, researchers and City agencies.
Principal responsibilities: The Project Coordinator's primary responsibility is to help coordinate all aspects of the design review meetings and related site visits with the Deputy Director and Project Manager. This includes managing relationships with the capital projects divisions of City agencies; researching projects, reviewing submission materials and preparing annotated agendas; coordinating with outside agencies and design advisory committees; attending and assisting at design review meetings and site visits; processing materials for the archives; and working on the development and implementation of a new data base to more effectively and efficiently track projects.
