Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for providing scientific direction in the areas of nutrition and health and wellness in addition to technical regulatory guidance in the areas of product and nutrition labeling for the entire Owned Brand Foods portfolio. Manages the technical regulatory review and approval process for all label information for Owned Brand Foods, including food advertising involving nutrition or ingredient claims. Responsibilities also include developing the internal labeling standards and guidelines, developing and improving the label information review and approval process, and contributing to developing health and wellness business strategies.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure regulatory compliance for all Owned Brand Food products.
- Oversee the process which ensures technical regulatory compliance of all product labels.
- Manage implementation of all new labeling regulations.
- Ensure validation of all nutritional claims and as well as various certifications.
- Ensure validation of all Nutrition Facts panel information.
- Ensure regulatory compliance of all advertising and store signage that include nutritional or ingredient claims.
- Lead process for technical regulatory review of advertising and store signage.
- Lead development of internal technical regulatory labeling standards and guidelines.
- Provide technical regulatory direction and guidance.
- Provide nutrition and technical regulatory strategic direction to the Owned Brand Foods Product Development and Buying Teams in support of new product and product improvement opportunities.
- Provide technical regulatory strategic guidance and assistance to Marketing in support of health and wellness initiatives.
- Monitor federal level food labeling regulatory agenda and anticipate impact of pending regulations on Owned Brand Foods product portfolio.
- Develop health and wellness strategies and programs.
- Identify and develop integrated approaches to health and wellness for SuperTarget stores and Owned Brand products through trend analysis and benchmark assessment.
- Communicate health and wellness trends. Consult with business teams and translate nutrition and health trends into product and business opportunities.
- Review marketing messages and claims to ensure appropriate to product category.
- Develop and manage relationships with external professional associations.
- Manage process for label information review and approval.
- Participate in cross-functional team to refine, improve and communicate the technical regulatory review and approval process for Target’s Owned Brand Foods.
- Ensure label development and review process consistent with industry best practices, including use of electronic information management applications.
- Communicate, internally and externally.
- Keep Owned Brand Foods team and buyers informed of significant regulatory developments and internal label information review process and requirements.
- Address vendor relationships involving label development and review process and requirements.
- Represent Target with the regulatory agencies on product and nutrition labeling issues.
- Represent Target with trade and professional associations.
- Lead and manage a professional Nutrition, Labeling & Regulatory Compliance staff.
- Manage exempt level technical regulatory labeling specialist(s), including work direction and performance appraisals.
- Technical direction, coaching and career development to maximize individual and team performance.
Job Qualifications
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Requirements:
- B.S. Food Science/Nutrition; M.S. Nutrition
- Registered Dietitian certification
- 5+ years technical regulatory food labeling experience
- 3+ years supervisory/management experience
- Cross-functional team experience
- Demonstrated project leadership skills and experience
- Strong communication skills, written & verbal
- Exhibits good judgment and decisiveness
- Trade and professional association experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office skills
Desired Requirements:
- Electronic product lifecycle management (PLM) experience
- Nutritional database experience
