Research
The thrust of my research program is in two areas: The first area is on timber engineering and mechanics. The focuses on this area has been on efficient use of wood and wood products in structural application through advanced testing, modeling, and development of analysis techniques to design efficient and safe wood structures. This includes theoretical studies, and experimental testing of joints, scaled-down-structural assemblies (diaphragms) and full-scale post-frame buildings. The second area is on modeling animal bio-energetics including engineering livestock thermal environments to maximize production and reproduction potential.
Research Impact:
· Our research work on diaphragm design of metal-clad, post-frame buildings became the basis for a national standard known as: "Diaphragm Design of Metal-Clad Post-Frame Rectangular Buildings, ASAE EP 484.1".
· Our research work on wind loads became the basis for a national standard known as: "Snow and Wind Load Standard, ASAE EP 288.4".
· Two of our computer software for structural analysis and design, SOLVER and METCLAD, have been in use for teaching, research and engineering practice throughout the U.S.A. and Canada.
